KS07 - Kurt Schwitters in England Festival September 23 - 30th, Ambleside and Elterwater
First International Kurt Schwitters Autumn School


Conference, exhibitions, performances and a MERZ FM community radio station
devoted to new research and artists' projects about Kurt Schwitters in England

Provisional programme:

MERZ FRONT Programme of exhibitions, poetry readings, films and performances of Schwitters' work, including new works and interpretations by contemporary artists, at various Ambleside venues; in pubs, shops, the local Cinema, bus station and village hall venues. 24 - 30 September.

MERZ KABARET Concert by international and regional musicians, poets and performers; Saturday 29 September.

MERZ BARN Exhibition about the Merz Barn and its history, and open weekend at Cylinders Estate, Elterwater 24 - 30 September.

MERZ SCHRIFT International conference focused on the writing, texts, poetry and performances of Kurt Schwitters; 28-30 September. At venues in Ambleside and Chapel Stile. Guest speakers/artists; Prof. Jerome Rothenberg, UC San Diego, Dr Dorothea Dietrich, Corcoran Washington, Dr Sarah Wilson, Courtauld Institute of Art, Dr Götz-Lothar Darsow (Hannover), Tom Paulin, Roger Cardinal, Christopher Fox, Florian Kaplick, and others tbc.

MERZ FM - Ambleside Community Radio. One week RSL community radio project (23 - 29 September) and broadcast programme of poems, audio arts projects and readings of works by Schwitters. Rethinking the URSONATE; discussion of new research and performances on air interpreting Schwitters' Ursonate, by invited international scholars, composers, singers and performance artists. Alongside other programmes of songs, plays, poetry and verse by regional artists, poets, folk singers, schools and community groups.

Annual Kurt Schwitters in England memorial lecture

'Merzbau I - Merzbau IV' Peter Bissegger

Peter Bissegger is the Swiss architect/designer who originally reconstructed Schwitters major Merzbau, sculpture/architectural installation for the Hannover Sprengel Museum, in the early 1980s.

Peter will give an informal introduction to his Merzbau reconstruction in Hannover, and also talk about the Merzbau on the island of Hjertoya.

Merz barn exhibition

11am Introduction to the Merz barn and the Cylinders Estate
Site visit to the Merz barn and Cylinders Estate, led by Fred Brookes, (Merz barn advisory committee), Laurie Fricker (landscape architect) and Edward Mills, (Cumbria Woodlands Trust).

An introduction to the history of the site, the origin and development of the Merz barn, and an insight into the ecological, woodlands and wildlife importance of the site.

1.00pm Lunch at Chapel Stile village hall

2.00pm Restoring the Merz barn and the Cylinders Estate
Seminar and round table discussion about the present state of the Merz barn and the Cylinders Estate, and outline proposals for their future restoration and conservation. Contributions from; Gwendolen Webster, Peter Bissegger, Roger Cardinal, Jasia Reichardt, Adrian Glew (Tate Archives), Zvonimir Bakotin, Edward Mills, Fred Brookes, and others

11am Merz barn and Kurt Schwitters research and curatorial projects.
Discussion of various Kurt Schwitters research and curatorial projects, currently underway in Britain, Norway, and Germany. Proposals for the KS07 international Kurt Schwitters Summer School and festival (July 2007); and K08, an international Merzbarn-Merzbauten exhibition and conference proposed for NW region and venues in Manchester, Liverpool and Ambleside (September 2008)
